A highlight of the program’s success to date is in classrooms in the Washoe County (Nevada) School District. The program is recognized as a reading tool and is available online for use for FREE by all teachers to incorporate into their individual curriculum. The program is also available as an in-school volunteer service program through the School District.
Tips on engaging school districts
What it took in the Washoe County School District in Northern Nevada
Over two years with the Vision Task Force, which was started in 2011 to determine a need to screen for jump eye movements in the schools. The threshold was to demonstrate that 10% of students would benefit from the screening. A target program on 314 children identified 89 as needing further evaluation. That’s 28%.
A one-hour meeting in 2015 that opened the first door to an elementary school where we were allowed to freely develop our program.
All in-school volunteers fill out annual applications.
Volunteers wanting to volunteer more than three times a month are fingerprinted by the School District.
Two hours to teach the volunteers how to screen for and remediate a lack of coordinated jump eye movements.
